Showering Together? Really?

A recurring suggestion among romance-advice writers is that partners should shower together. Is this really a good idea? When I'm in the shower, I have a very clear agenda. I want to get clean, wash my hair, and shave my armpits. This is not a team effort. What I don't want is to worry about how I look (even though I look pretty darn good under water). I don't want to wait for my turn to use the soap, and I really don't want to stand there shivering while my sweetheart stands between me and the flow of hot water. The shower in my bathroom is a rather narrow space which would make it complicated for two people to maneuver around each other. Yes, I know, getting close is the idea. Even so....

Sure, it's supposed to be sexy. But is it really? It's a slippery environment composed of hard surfaces and hazardous projections (the faucet, the soap holder). If you lose your balance, you are not going to have a pleasant landing. Anxiety about a possible bruised hip or broken nose does not make me feel sexy. If the plan is to continue the action outside the shower, you will have to stop and dry off - unless you want to jump into bed soaking wet. Or maybe you're planning to do it right there on the bathroom floor, yet another hard surface.

Still, somebody must like this, or it wouldn't appear on so many suggestion lists. Right? Or is this one of those things that people just say because it seems like a good idea, until you actually try it?

  1. Maybe showering together might be fun if you're in good shape and have a big shower and lots of time. But it really seems kind of silly.

  2. Stayed at a spa resort where they had big showers with gigantic spray heads. Plenty of room and we could soap each other's backs, and so on. Lots of laughs and it was really sexy too.

  3. For me shower time is private time.

  4. It's one of those things you see a lot on TV. It looks like a great idea. Reality kicks in when you take a look at the ordinary bathroom. The size of the bath, shower, room, etc and not to mention the flexibility, stamina, size/weight of the person (yes, it is a factor) remember you are in a wet slippery environment!

I'll stick to using my bath time to bathe. Don't fancy a trip to the local hospital and we have plenty other rooms to consider :)

  8. In our apartment our shower and tub were a bit larger and there was room for both of us in it. We took 95% of our showers together although it was definitely a nuisance sharing the water. When we moved into our little house the showers are TINY and hubby often mentions missing showering together. We do have a garden tub so on occasion we can use that.

  9. Coordination with each other is troubling?! That's part of the point!

  10. I LOVE showering with hubby. We have a tub shower combo that hubby installed a double head in, so we each get our own stream of water. We have our own soaps and shampoo. We sometimes just shower and go and others times have some "clean" fun. Haven't had shower sex, though.

  11. I think the "show is private time" comment is significant. This would be especially true for introverts and/or stay-at-home mos with several small children.

If once spouse wants it, I would think doing it occasionally would be loving. Maybe make it part of foreplay once in a while, or as the start of date night?

  12. I love showering together, wish it happened more often, but too many young kids around.
